Kate’s experience as a psychologist spans more than 30 years working in many settings including community health, TAFE and universities, occupational rehabilitation, health promotion and community development in rural areas. She has wide experience in counselling adults, couples and families, which she brings to her private practice in Brisbane’s western suburbs.
In recent years, Kate’s research contributed to the development of an innovative school-based program to promote resilience with children and adolescents from multicultural backgrounds, as well as helping schools develop a more positive culture to support young people’s mental health. She realised that many people, not only children, benefit from learning more about their strengths and everyday strategies they can use to promote resilience in the face of hard times. This led her to the new field of Positive Psychology and “life coaching”, both of which she now integrates into her work with individuals, couples and families.
Kate takes a practical approach to her clinical work now, teaching a range of life skills including mindfulness, strengths-spotting, finding life purpose, building optimism and emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and more to help her clients build a satisfying and meaningful life. Apart from individual and couples counselling, she regularly offers small group programs based on a range of positive psychology techniques, and teaches coaching and positive psychology courses at university.
